Steve Beren - Biography

Steve Beren

Steve Beren is a pro-liberty conservative citizen activist doing all he can to support the U.S.-led war against terrorism, and deeply involved in the Tea Party protest movement against the Obama economic agenda.  Beren participated in the September 12, 2009 National Taxpayers Tea Party March on Washington, D.C.

From 1968 to 1990, Steve Beren was a radical antiwar protester, an opponent of the U.S. government, and a revolutionary socialist activist, but since then he has become an evangelical Christian, a patriot, and a conservative Republican.  He is a speaker, writer, blogger, and activist with a special insight into the motivations of the current antiwar movement, and the fallacies of their arguments.  He was the 2006 and 2008 Republican candidate for Congress U.S. (7th CD, Washington State) against far left Democrat Jim McDermott.  He is now the camapign manager for the Art Coday for U.S. Senate campaign against incumbenet Senator Patty Murray (http://www.codayforussenate.com).

Beren, now 58 years old, was a member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) until 1990, and was directly involved in the Vietnam antiwar movement as a member of the SWP in the 1960s and 1970s. Beren once opposed the very concept of patriotism, but he is now himself a patriot -- one with a unique perspective on the activities of today's radicals and extremists.

After graduating high school at the age of 16, Beren attended City College of New York (CCNY), where he joined the Young Socialist Alliance (youth group of the SWP) and became active in the campus chapter of the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam.  While at CCNY, he did temporary office work in New York's financial district, in what was then the shadow of the World Trade Center construction site.  Although he was one of the top high school students in the state, he discontinued his education, remaining at CCNY for only two years.

Beren instead devoted his time and energy to the life of a revolutionary political organizer. During two decades of radical activity, he organized protests against the war in Vietnam; publicized socialist election campaigns; defended the Nicaraguan Sandinistas, Cuban Communists, and the Palestine Liberation Organization; advocated far left positions on social, domestic, and foreign policy issues; and participated in the SWP's intervention into the trade union movement (He was at various times a textile worker, a steelworker, and a Boeing machinist.).

Beren "retired" from political activism in 1990.  He became a Christian in 1995.  He and his wife live in the Seattle area where they are members of Christian Faith Center.

Despite his political "retirement," after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, Beren felt he had a responsibility to do what he could (as a private citizen activist) to help win the war against terrorism.  In particular, he seeks to bring his message to young people, challenging the leftist political domination of our nation's campuses.
