Dear Friends: I have struggled for several months about whether or not to co-sponsor the current Bush impeachment resolution. - I have studied the impeachment process.
- I have talked to knowledgeable people who have been through the Nixon and Clinton impeachment debates.
- My constituents at home and a number of my colleagues in the Congress have lobbied me about impeachment.
I do not take the concept of impeachment lightly! Impeachment is a dire course of actionHowever, impeachment is the precise and appropriate action called for in response to the increasingly dire situation created by President Bush himself. This President has misled the Congress of the United States, created secret laws; failed to comply with congressional subpoenas; authorized the use of torture in secret prisons; suspended provisions of the Constitution (Habeas Corpus); and authorized eavesdropping against our citizens. This President has invaded a foreign country and taken our country to war absent a declaration of war. I cannot allow such conduct to pass - not on my watch. Not when I serve this country in the United States Congress. Threats and Intimidation - a GOP trademarkSilencing dissent has been a tactic of the Administration and the GOP. Fear is what kept this Administration in office in 2004. It is a practice the Administration understands and uses often. Those of us in the Congress who add our voices to unpopular causes often find ourselves the target of vicious right-wing attacks.
Joining eight of my colleagues and adding my name to the Bush impeachment resolution will no doubt subject me to another round of attacks by the Bush Administration and their henchmen. Being attacked by right-wing Republicans is not new to me. Today, I have another concern: the Presidential election. We Democrats are facing a very real threat in November A McCain/Palin Administration would ensure that President Bush and Vice President Cheney receive a free pass for their unlawful actions. We cannot allow that to happen. The Republicans have raised the stakes by fielding a right-wing national ticket that could easily set our progressive agenda back for a generation! I appeal for your support today - it is URGENTLY NEEDED!Recent surveys show that McCain/Palin is gaining strength in Washington State. Last weekend, Karl Rove told a national television audience that Washington State is up for grabs in the Presidential election. We can not afford to allow Washington State to slip away into the Republican column on election day. Our voter turnout programs must be strengthened. I am committed to doing what ever I can to register more Democrats and get them to the polls to vote. My campaign fund has been spent to support these efforts but more is needed. The stakes could not be higher. My committee has always relied on small donations from individual donors. If large numbers of people will respond to today's appeal I will be able do my part over the next 50 days. Your online donation to my campaign committee - www.McDermottforCongress.com - will reach my campaign immediately. Sincerely, Jim McDermott P.S. PLEASE REMEMBER! There are fewer than 50 days until the election. Please don't delay. |
